What to Wear on Safari

Your Guidebook

Safari is one of the few trips where what you wear is genuinely part of the experience. You want to look polished in every photo, feel confident stepping into camp, and still be completely comfortable from pre-dawn game drives to fireside dinners under the stars.

Shop safari style

The secret isn't packing more; it's building a wardrobe that layers beautifully, moves with you, and stays elevated even after long travel days. That's exactly where Anatomie earns its place in my bag. The pieces are machine washable, exceptionally stretchy, and reliably wrinkle-resistant. Give something thirty seconds on the body after unpacking and it relaxes right out. More importantly, the tailoring is genuinely flattering. You don't just feel good, you look great, which matters when you're wearing the same core pieces on repeat.

The Layering Strategy

In the Mara, mornings are crisp, midday is warm, and evenings cool off again quickly. A refined layering system keeps you comfortable throughout and creates that effortless safari aesthetic: clean base layers, a smart mid layer, and a structured outer piece that pulls everything together.

Safari style should feel effortless.

The goal is a wardrobe that photographs beautifully, feels elevated in luxury settings, and performs quietly in the background. With the right layers and a few perfectly cut staples, you look the part, feel at ease, and stay ready for whatever the day brings.

The Kate Skinny Cargo Pant

The cornerstone of a safari wardrobe. Lightweight, technical, and beautifully cut, with pockets that actually earn their keep when you need to grab your phone mid-sighting. I bring two pairs. One in tan, one in gray, and everything else builds around them.

Kim Mesh Top

A breathable, refined layer that keeps you cool during midday game drives without sacrificing polish. The mesh detail adds texture and visual interest. It looks just as intentional over a base layer as it does on its own.

Delaney Travel Vest

The layer that makes a wardrobe feel intentional. It adds warmth without bulk and elevates even the simplest base. Ideal for early mornings when you want to be cozy but still look put-together.

Kenya Safari Jacket

The hero piece. It's structured and chic, yet durable enough for the bush. it gives you that classic safari silhouette instantly. It looks just as beautiful in Nairobi as it does in the Mara, and it consistently draws compliments. This is the layer that makes you feel truly dressed for the experience.

Stacey Top

Safari mornings and nights can be genuinely cold, and this is the piece that keeps you cozy without sacrificing style. The relaxed fit feels luxurious, it's perfect for camp downtime, and it pairs beautifully with the Kate pant on long-haul flights.

Getting There

Making Travel Plans For Nairobi

Nairobi is well connected from the US. Kenya Airways and operates with nonstop service from select US gateways, which is ideal for those who prefer direct routing and minimal layovers.

For a more elevated long-haul experience, Qatar Airways via Doha is widely considered the gold standard in business class travel. Their Qsuite offers genuinely private suites and exceptional service, and arriving rested makes all the difference when you're heading straight into safari. It's my preferred routing.

The Maasai Mara: The Heart of Safari

Conservancies & Why They Matter

The Maasai Mara ecosystem spans both the National Reserve and a network of private conservancies. For a luxury safari, understanding the difference is essential.

The National Reserve is government-managed and expansive — iconic for Great Migration river crossings and dramatic wildlife moments. However, vehicle numbers are uncapped, which can feel busy during peak season.

Private conservancies operate on leased Maasai land, managed in genuine partnership with local communities. They limit guest numbers, restrict vehicles at sightings, and permit experiences unavailable in the reserve: off-road driving, guided walking safaris, and night drives. For the discerning traveler, conservancies offer a quieter, more refined encounter with the same extraordinary wildlife — plus direct support of the communities who call this land home.

Where to Stay in The Maasai Mara

Kempinski Olare Mara

I'll say it plainly: this is quite possibly my favorite place in the world. An intimate, beautifully polished camp within a private conservancy, with only 12 tents. Spacious, serene, and utterly immersive. This is what luxury safari looks like at its finest.

Angama Mara

Perched high above the plains with sweeping, cinematic views. Design-forward and deeply serene, the kind of place that makes every sunrise feel like a gift.

Mahali Mzuri

Sir Richard Branson's contemporary safari camp. Warm, full of personality, and refined in all the right ways. A wonderful choice for travelers who want character alongside comfort.

JW Marriott Maasai Mara Lodge

A modern interpretation of safari luxury. Generous accommodations, expansive Mara views, and the seamless service the brand is known for.

When to Visit The Maasai Mara

The Perfect Journey

The Maasai Mara rewards visitors year-round, so there truly is no wrong time to go. Drier months bring golden light and exceptional wildlife visibility. Greener seasons soften the landscape and quiet the plains in a different, equally beautiful way.

If witnessing the Great Migration is your priority, July and August offer the most dramatic river crossings, but they're also the busiest and most expensive months. Personally, I prefer the shoulder seasons: late May through June, or September into October. The wildlife is abundant, the camps are calmer, and the light is extraordinary.

Valerie's Tip: Request a private vehicle for at least one full day. Most camps offer this for an additional fee, and it's one of the best investments you can make on safari. You set the pace — earlier departures, longer time in the field, and the freedom to stay with a sighting as long as you choose. Entirely worth it.

Serengeti Safari

Where sweeping golden plains meet untamed wilderness, your perfect safari wardrobe awaits.
