In this day and age, the world can be a dangerous place, especially for solo female travelers. There are many women who would love to pack their bags and travel the globe but find that something is holding them back, and that something is fear.
It’s a myth that a woman can’t travel solo. Of course you can, but you should exercise caution. You should always use some common sense when doing so and research your destination beforehand: avoid areas that are known to be shady, always trust your instincts and be aware of your surroundings. Some places just happen to be safer to visit than others, and that’s why we’ve made a list of the top places to travel to if you are a solo female traveler (or anyone for that matter).

Costa Rica is one of the world’s happiest countries and when you head to this Central American destination you will be sure to understand why (just look at the picture above).
If it’s fun, sun, sand and surf that you’re after then there is truly no better place. There are also so many natural beauties such as the Poás Volcano and the Celeste River. If the beaches are not what have drawn you to Costa Rica then head to the country’s capital, San Jose, and experience the open air markets, impressive museums and the local cuisine.
When getting around within the country buses are a good choice, and within cities and towns walking is the best option. There are plenty of articles suggesting that Costa Rica is a wonderful destination that you can safely travel to as a solo female traveler, it is still important to take the necessary precautions, and always be aware of your surroundings and avoid deserted and unfamiliar places.

According to the publication Travel and Leisure, Japan is a great place to visit as a solo traveler, and is ranked as the 8th safest place in the world. Travel to Tokyo Metropolis and experience one the most populous metropolitan areas in the world, and of course this is not for everyone but if amazing architecture and skyscrapers are your thing then this is definitely the place to go. There is also a virtually unlimited choice of entertainment, dining and shopping on offer for visitors.

The Emerald Isle is a beautiful destination and the Irish are known for their warmth and hospitality. Solo female travelers will certainly not look or feel out of place here. The country’s capital Dublin tends to get the most attention and there are many great spots to visit such as the Guinness Storehouse, Phoenix Park and the Kilmainham Gaol, among many others. Not to mention the great shopping you can do on Grafton Street or St. Stephens Green. The city is also easily accessible by public transport.
However, Dublin is not the only place in Ireland worth visiting: the countryside is a particularly beautiful and tranquil environment, and one in which you can really be one with your thoughts.
New Zealand is not just the backdrop for the Lord of the Rings trilogy, it’s also a very safe place for solo female travelers, and according to Women’s Adventure Magazine, you will find that the English speaking locals are friendly and easy to interact with.
If you’re a bit of an outdoor-adventure junkie, then this is the perfect travel destination for you because and you’ll be able to enjoy hikes, jet boating, horseback riding, skydiving and bungee jumping, among many more great activities.
Much like its neighbor New Zealand, Australia is a fantastic place to visit if you’re going solo, and although the plane ride can be unbearable (don’t forget to pack your Anatomie fashion travel clothing for the utmost comfort) the locals will make your time there worth it.
It’s a massive country and there is something for everyone, from fashion to adventure and some incredible white sandy beaches for those who want to enjoy the hot sunshine. Head to Melbourne to enjoy the rich culture, street art and sprawling landscapes.

Denmark is a very popular destination for solo female travelers because it is a land filled with rich culture and Norse religious history, but it’s also extremely safe. According to About Travel, women do not have to fear any kind of harassment in Denmark, but when you head to the capital, Copenhagen, you should take the usual precautions because it is such a large, busy city and single travelers often tend to avoid entering the train stations at night.
When in Denmark you can gaze at the beautiful architecture, visit the countless museums and art galleries such as Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, and enjoy the great shopping!
According to Travel and Leisure, Norway is ranked the 10th safest destination, and that means that it’s a great destination for solo female travelers. However, it’s not just the safety aspect that will endear you to this Scandinavian country but also the unspoiled natural landscape of the inner parts of the country.
You board one of the Hurtigruten coastal steamers that sail up the coast of Norway, into the city of Bergen, and through some of the country’s most beautiful fjords. There is also the famous northern lights and countless beautiful museums and galleries which you can enjoy. But be warned, traveling to Norway doesn’t come cheap.
Martha’s Vineyard, in Massachusetts
According to USA Today, Martha’s Vineyard is another great spot to head if you are wanting to enjoy a safe and picturesque trip. Why not head to the quaint little bucolic island just off the coast of Massachusetts for a summer of bike and scooter rides and fun by the seaside while you take in the beauty of the stately Greek revival houses, without having to look over your shoulder.
Iceland is full of culture and life, and although it’s freezing cold and has some of the highest taxes in the world, it’s still worth a visit due to its magnificent volcanoes, excellent whale watching, swimming in the The Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa, and relaxing walks along the beautiful waterfront walkways.
Solo female travelers will feel absolutely comfortable and safe while there, and the capital city Reykjavik is a wonderful place to enjoy the Icelandic culture and traditions.
